The first launch of the Atlas V rocket occurred in August 2002. The Atlas V, built by Lockheed Martin, was the first rocket in the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program of the US Air Force.

The rockets of this program carry incremental loads with the mere fact of adding more modules. In fact, the only rocket that is capable of carrying more is Saturn V, which took astronauts to the Moon.

Atlas rockets have a reputation for being very reliable. Highlighted in the image in the left circle is a small RocketCam camera that sends images of the rocket during launch.
