It is the smallest and most distant of the two satellites of Mars. The other is called Phobos.

Its physical characteristics have been well known since November 1971, when the American Mariner 9 automatic probe studied it closely. It has an irregular shape, reminiscent of a potato with bites, with approximate dimensions of 15 x 12 x 11 km.

Its surface is dotted with small craters. It is in orbit around Mars at a distance of 23,500 km., With a period of 30 h. and 18 minutes. It has a mass of 2 x 10 raised to 15 kg. and an average density twice that of water.
