IO (satellite)

IO (satellite)

It is the innermost of the four Jupiter satellites discovered by Galileo, and is easily visible even with a modest optical instrument.

It has a diameter of 3,640 km, is 422,000 km from Jupiter and has an orbital period of 1.8 days. It is the only body in the solar system, after Earth, to have shown persistent and intense volcanic activity.

The revelation came with the Voyager probes, which in 1979 he was photographed closely.
