It is a space launch polygon of the ESA (European Space Agency), from which the flights of the Ariane transporter were usually made.
It is located in French Guyana, on the Atlantic coast, 18 km west of the city of Kourou from which it takes its name.
The polygon, which is located about 5 degrees north latitude, is in an advantageous geographical position from the ballistic point of view: the starting rockets receive a free supplementary thrust due to the greater centrifugal force that is manifested, by effect of Earth's rotation, in equatorial latitudes.
