Astronomers have studied a group of asteroids thanks to observations made from the earth's surface. Some of the most notable are Toutatis, Castalia, Geographos and Vesta.
Scientists around the world studied Toutatis, Geographos and Castalia using the observations obtained by radar from the Earth's surface during its stage of maximum approach to Earth. Vesta was observed from the Hubble Space Telescope.
It is believed that most of the meteorites recovered on Earth are asteroid fragments. Asteroid observations by telescopic and radar spectroscopy, as well as data obtained by the Near Shoemaker probe, seem to support this hypothesis.
