This drawing shows the Stardust spacecraft during its encounter with comet P / Wild 2. The primary objective of the Stardust mission was to fly over comet P / Wild 2 and collect samples of dust and volatile substances in the comet's tail. You will return these samples to Earth for detailed study. The mission will also collect grain samples from interstellar dust.
Other objectives involve photographing the comet's nucleus and making a preliminary analysis of the chemical composition of dust particles. Interstellar dust samples, material outside our solar system, will be carefully examined from Earth.
