Cirrus jets. Earth's atmosphere

This photograph, taken from about 320 kilometers above the Earth, shows a band of cirrus trees produced by a jet stream that advances westward and extends through the Red Sea from Sudan to Saudi Arabia.

Cirrus clouds are high clouds with a tuft or feather look. Located in the atmosphere at an altitude of about 8 km, cirrus clouds contain ice crystals.

This photo, taken from the space shuttle, shows how the cloud band comprises a series of different groupings of clouds, spaced precisely. These are created by the rotational movements that occur in air currents at high levels. The uniformity of this cloud formation reflects the path followed by the current that moves from left to right through the image.
