This spectacular image of the ocean covered by clouds, without well-defined marks, shows the passage from day to night on our planet Earth. It can be seen that the separation or terminator line is quite diffuse and shows a gradual transition to the darkness we experience at sunset.
With the sun shining from the right, the high clouds reflect the filtered light of the sun through a dusty troposphere, which is the lowest layer of our atmosphere. The clean layer of the stratosphere, visible in the illuminated part, rescues the blue color of sunlight and returns it to space.
This image is in fact a digital photograph taken in June 2001 from the International Space Station orbiting at an altitude of 211 nautical miles.
