London by night. Earth from Space

Although it looks like a globular cluster of stars, it is a photo of the Earth. In fact, it is the constellation of the city lights surrounding London, England, as photographed by the digital camera of the International Space Station.

The image was taken in February 2003, the north is up and slightly to the left in this night view. The surrounding London motorway, the M25 (not the Messier 25), is easy to distinguish from the south of the city. Even further south you can see the lights of Gatwick airport and further west (on the left) of Heathrow.

The dark river Thames is located east of the city. In particular, two small "dark nebulae" - Hyde Park and Regents Park - lie slightly west of the dense London population.
