This is what Earth looks like at night. Surprisingly, city lights make this task quite possible. Product of man, the lights highlight particularly developed or populated areas of the Earth's surface, including the coastlines of Europe, the eastern region of the United States and Japan.
Many large cities are located near rivers or oceans so that they can exchange goods by boat at a low price. Among the particularly dark areas are the central regions of South America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
The image is in fact a composition of hundreds of photographs taken by DMSP satellites in orbit.
